NRI writer adopts Punjab village for its social reform

Jalandhar (Punjab), 16 May: Mr MS Rattu, a non-resident Indian (NRI), has adopted a village Ramuwal in Punjab’s Jalandhar District to bring about social reform there. Rattu, who migrated to England in 1990, is back in his ancestral Ramuwal village. For Rattu bringing about a social change takes precedence over the village’s economic growth. He revived the village trust formed two decades ago by his father late Mr D R Rattu Retd Naib Tehsildar with a mission to curb the menace of female foeticide, besides providing healthy lifestyle to the villagers. While the country is facing a challenge of gender imbalance, Ramuwal village is an example worth emulating.“Our village is an extreme example having 105 girls over 100 boys. This is the only village in Punjab where girls out number boys. I am proud that the trust formed by my father proved fruitful,” said Rattu, who is a Publisher in the States of Americas. His trust provides various facilities to girl child, among them free education is the top priority. The trust also provides computer education to village boys, alongside the girls. It also helps in formalising marriages of girls belonging to poor families by giving monetary help.Rattu’s trust organises regular medical camps to make villagers aware of how to keep their environment clean to avoid various diseases and helps them lead a healthy life. Due to unclean drinking water, villagers suffer with diseases like jaundice, he said, adding that the camps are held free-of-cost to create knowledge among them. “Villagers are not aware of diabetes. It is only when we arranged check-ups that blood pressure and diabetes have been detected in many,” he said. It is the satisfaction that Rattu gets by working for his village, which motivates him to keep doing the good work. He build a big library in memory of his fater Late Mr. D R Rattu, which is open for pubic 24 hours with 500 commuter user same time. Village Ramuwal Sarpanch Mr. Prem Rattu and Member of Panchyatt Resham Singh both trust Member look after these project.
